“Growing up in Howth, on the trawler with my dad, filleting fish, I started my career in food & drink observing the theatre of the fishing industry and learning from the best in the business. I remember seeing boats so laden with fish they sat deep in the water until barrels of herrings were lined up on the dock as far as the eye could see. On Thursday’s chefs from all over Dublin would make the trip out to Howth to secure the best quality catch from businesses of all sizes, from the likes of my family’s business to the legendary Mrs Moore who would balance a chopping board of fish atop a pram and sell her wares.
From 14 years old, I was at the fish market in Howth, bidding on islands of catch at the auctions and learning the trade from Howth legends like; Peter Caverson, George Nollan from Molloy’s and Brian Doyle – whose old wooden fishing boat, ‘The Kiloran’ was an icon of the docks. I’d watch the fisherman return after long nights out on the water come in for 7am whiskeys at Hugh’s pub or grab an early breakfast sausage roll at the fish market cafe. These establishments and the rich cultural heritage of Howth laid the foundation for my future in bars, restaurants, cafes. When I set out on my own it was this DNA that I took with me and have put into every one of my businesses since.”
Growing up part of the Irish seafood industry, Michael went on to independently found The Wright Group in 1996.
His philosophy in life is ‘Dream it, Believe it, Achieve it’.
Under his leadership, his multi award-winning businesses have not only thrived but have set new standards for hospitality throughout Ireland. His dynamic leadership style inspires his team to think outside the box and deliver exceptional results.
